삼바(SAMBA) 서버란마이크로소프트와 인텔은 윈도우시스템이 다른 시스템의 디스크 또는 프린터등 자원을 공유할 수 있도록 SMB(Server Message Block)이라는 프로토콜을 개발하였는데, 삼바(SAMBA)란 이 SMB를 이용하여 유닉스/리눅스와 윈도우와의 자료 공유 및 하드웨어를 공유할 수 있도록 해준다. 현재 마이크로소프트에서는 SMB라는 이름보다는 좀 더 범위가 큰 CIFS(Common Internet File System)라는 프로토콜로 부른다. 이 프로토콜은 SMB 프로토콜에 Lan Manager, NetBIOS 프로토콜까지 포함한다.
